THYROID SURGERY

Part of the thyroid gland or the entire thyroid gland may be removed depending on the indications of the thyroidectomy.

Thyroidectomy is usually indicated for the following conditions:

  • Cancer

  • Compression of the Oesophagus with swallowing difficulty.

  • Control of thyroid hormones.

 

Great care has to be taken during the surgery of thyroid gland as it involves the voice box, parathyroids and important blood vessels in the neck area.

Thyroidectomy is usually performed under general anaesthesia and a nerve monitoring device is also used to preserve the nerve supply of the voice box.
